CHAPTER 8
DISTRESS 46, JET BLAST EROSION
8.1. Description. Jet blast erosion causes darkened areas on the pavement surface when
bituminous binder has been burned or carbonized; localized burned areas may vary in depth up
to approximately 1/2 inch (12.7 millimeters). A deduct curve for jet blast erosion is shown in
Figure 8.1.
8.2. Severity Levels.
No degrees of severity are defined. It is sufficient to indicate that jet blast erosion exists
(Figures 8.2. and 8.3.).
8.3. How to Measure. Jet blast erosion is measured in square feet (square meters) of surface
area.
8.4. Options for Repair.
Do nothing; partial-depth patch; apply rejuvenator.*
* Improperly applied rejuvenators or surface seals may cause skid problems on high-speed
surfaces.
